The Canned Response

In Uncategorized on January 28, 2011 at 1:05 pm

If you’re like me, you get somewhat unnerved when passing someone else in the hallway – especially when it’s only the two of you. The situation is even worse when the hallway is so long that both of you search for every distraction imaginable until the absolute final opportunity to make eye contact or say hello. I just can’t seem to master the skill of smiling comfortably – instead it’s a closed mouth smirk that, I’m convinced, makes me look like a giant tool. How do you strike the right balance between acknowledging the other person in a friendly way and coming across as weirdly interested? Read the rest of this entry »

URL Shorteners – Awkward?

In Uncategorized on January 24, 2011 at 1:09 pm

A short post today in (dis)honor of the shortened URL. For those not familiar, a URL shortener is a tool for taking longer URLs and shortening them usually for two purposes – to fit it (i.e. within a 140-character Twitter message) and/or to track how many people click on it. The issue I have is that they are often used to hide the real URL you are taken to. Read the rest of this entry »

Unreasonably Competitive

In Uncategorized on January 20, 2011 at 2:56 pm

These two words have frequently been used by others to describe me, so this post is mostly therapeutic. Whether it’s weekend recreational leagues or a few rounds of pool at a buddy’s place, there is a clear and obvious line you cross when you do whatever it takes to win. Some situations don’t call for your best – especially when your best isn’t good anymore or you’re trying to out-duel a small child in ping pong. Don’t act like this goes unnoticed.

At the gym – you come here often?

In Uncategorized on January 18, 2011 at 12:20 pm

About Us – and Why You Should Care

In Uncategorized on January 15, 2011 at 1:49 pm

What do you display on the About Us or About Me page on your website? If you can’t recall immediately, it’s probably because you’re not giving it the attention it deserves. Most people – as individuals or companies – use the page to talk ALL about them: the wonderful work they do and how awesome they are compared to everyone else. The page is usually stale, unattractive, narrow, arrogant and boring. It should bother you that these words might be used to also describe your brand.

Relationship Requests

In Uncategorized on January 10, 2011 at 7:08 pm

What are people thinking when they send a request – through LinkedIn, Facebook, or any other social network – without a profile picture or a personal message. Ok, Ok. So you “know” the person and want to save time. Well, let me tell you something. As more and more people join these networks, circles will grow bigger and people will naturally become more and more selective. They won’t feel so compelled to accept your arrogantly lazy request.

Dental Hygiene

In Uncategorized on January 10, 2011 at 5:59 pm

Around 3pm each day during the week, I shamefully stroll to the bathroom at work carrying my toothbrush and paste. I can’t help but feel awkward as people stare in awe that I’ve carried something in. Sure, I know that it’s perfectly acceptable to have clean teeth and good breath, but it’s the act of doing it at work in a shared bathroom that is just uncomfortable.
